A question of ethics
Today’s business courses give high emphasis on ethical behaviour. In the USA 90% of business schools teach the subject and over 600 books on the theme have been published. Many new ethics courses are appearing in Britain as we try to teach our aspiring entrepreneurs to think outside of profit making, an example is King’s College in London which has its own Business Ethics Centre. In my opinion ethics has 2 stages (some debate on deeper levels) there’s the personal ethics and the organisations ethics. Ethics come into play when, for example, you have a worker who’s doing minimum work and slowing production, clearly you would get rid of him but he’s 2 years from retirement and you know he won’t get another job, still fire him? Your individual conflict now interferes with your organisations ethics of ‘profit maximisation’. Ethical thinking in the business environment is ever evident outside of the business environment as the government pushes to a greener future, but will businesses be prepared to think in an environmental and ethical way?
