Absenteeism the business cost
Absenteeism is a very costly act. In 2004, a total of 168 million working days were lost to absence, costing UK employers£12.2 billion. These costs arise because of: lost output and paying other employees to cover the work. How do managers deal with this? Some managers believe they should be tougher with employees so they wouldn’t dare miss a day off (a stick policy). Some think you should to reward those who turn up consistently to encourage other employees to follow in the same way (a carrot policy).Others believe it is a mainly a question of providing a better level of motivation so that employees want to come to work. Managers try a whole range of methods to find out why people are taking days off, the most effective is trend spotting. Trend spotting is when you make a year scale of all absences taken to find out at what time it peaked this can be crucial when trying to find out cause and effect. What’s your method?
