Maslow and the Modern Day
Maslow introduced a hierarchy of human needs, in which physical needs (pay and working conditions), were at the bottom of the hierarchy. Esteem needs and selfactualisation (which according to Maslow means 'to become everything that one is capable of becoming') were at the top, but the question I ask is does this theory still apply now? Selfactualisation is a key feature in today's society, often people say they're trying to "find their calling" and in this they mean, job security, fair wage and recognition, these are the fundamentals of job satisfaction and fulfill (in the basic principles) the full hierarchy. The most modern representation I see comes with self-actualization, because once you reach your peak there are more branches you can reach out to, because of this the top can never be sustained which is how our modern working life seems to go, we find something, try it, we're happy, find something new or look for promotions/more responsibilities. I would suggest that Maslow's theory will always apply to how satisfied we feel.
